TECH4HEALTH, which has been awarded the F-CRIN label and is supported by Inserm, supports start-ups and institutions in the development of medical devices (MDs), from proof-of-concept through to clinical and post-market evaluation. The network announces the arrival of three new members to its coordination team, and unveils new ambitions to strengthen its position as a key player in healthcare technology innovation.

A key partner for technological innovations in healthcare

In a sector where innovation is key and imposes a sustained pace, medical devices have to pass through major regulatory (EU 2017/745 and 746) and clinical validation stages until they are marketed and managed, for patients and their caregivers. Each stage of development represents a real challenge. Poorly supported, companies risk being victims of costly delays, encountering deadlock situations, not receiving the support of healthcare professionals and, in fine, not being able to make their often very heavy investment profitable. In this highly regulated sector, TECH4HEALTH is establishing itself as an essential partner. Its network, which today includes 18 members across the country, offers multidisciplinary expertise and comprehensive support from proof-of-concept through to clinical and post-market evaluation, to accelerate the evaluation, market launch and adoption of new medical technologies.

TECH4HEALTH has also made continuing education a key focus of its business. The network supports start-ups and institutions (researchers, clinicians, project managers, ethics committees, etc.) in their regulatory, methodological and economic challenges.

Since 2015, it has supported major projects such as EVAL-HRMD (a new evaluation method for high-risk DMs), SELIO (an innovative device to reduce the risk of pneumothorax) and ARCLIMED (a professional training course in quality, regulatory and clinical affairs for Medical Devices, bringing together 10 universities, Euro-Pharmat and SNITEM).

A new coordination team to support Medical Device professionals

In order to pursue its expansion and complete its territorial coverage, TECH4HEALTH is renewing its coordination team with three new experts taking the reins of the network, succeeding Sylvia Pelayo and Thierry Chevallier, whose mandate (2020-2024) is coming to an end:

  • Marlène Durand - Doctor of neuroscience and neuropharmacology (University of Bordeaux), expert in biomaterials and medical devices at the Bordeaux CIC-IT (Inserm CIC 1401).
  • Frédéric Barbot - Hospital practitioner (pharmacology), specialized in methodology, disability and digital at the CIC-IT in Garches (Inserm CIC 1429)
  • Marine Beaumont - Doctor of Engineering (Grenoble Alpes University), specialized in medical imaging at the CIC-IT in Nancy (Inserm CIC 1433).

TECH4HEALTH accelerates its development with a new dynamic

The appointment of new TECH4HEALTH coordinators marks the start of a new four-year strategic cycle aimed at consolidating the network's territorial roots and promoting innovation in healthcare. The aim: to facilitate access for manufacturers, researchers and clinicians to the infrastructures and resources essential for the development of medical devices.

With this in mind, TECH4HEALTH aims to increase its influence by strengthening its collaborations with the F-CRIN networks, and accentuating partnerships with the Délégations à la Recherche Clinique et à l'Innovation to support clinical trials and innovative projects.

Finally, the network plans to organize new events and training courses dedicated to medical devices and artificial intelligence that would bring together researchers, industrialists and healthcare professionals.

GREAT VALIDATION STEPS FOR A MEDICAL DEVICE

  • Proof of concept and pre-clinical testing: validation of the innovation's early development and performance.

  • Usability and usage testing:to guarantee optimal adoption by healthcare professionals.

  • Clinical investigations:evaluate clinical safety and efficacy, to obtain CE marking and ensure market access.

  • Medicoeconomic studies: facilitate reimbursement of innovations.

Post-market clinical analysis: real-life follow-up.

"Our priority is to accelerate innovation by better structuring projects and offering training tailored to industry players. Thanks to this new team, we are strengthening our capacity for action", says Marlène Durand.

Created in 2012, supported by Inserm and funded by ANR and the Ministry of Health, F-CRIN (French Clinical Research Infrastructure Network) is an organization of excellence serving French clinical research. Its aim is to strengthen the competitivenesś of French clinical research internationally, identify and label national research networks, facilitate the setting up of academic or industrial clinical trials, and develop the expertise of clinical research players by pooling know-how, objectives and resources.
